Why this page is not a ranking
Most “best AI SEO tools” articles are a numbered list of products that do incomparable things, scored against criteria that are never stated. A crawler and a citation tracker are not competitors; you need both, at different points, for different reasons. Ranking them against each other produces a list that reads well and cannot be acted on.

1 · Demand and prompt research
The job: find out what your buyers actually ask, and how much of it there is. What changes for AI SEO is the shape of the input. Generative engines rewrite a prompt into several related sub-queries before they search anything, so a flat keyword list under-describes what you are competing for. You want natural-language questions, grouped by funnel stage, with real volume attached.
Free and sufficient for most teams: Google Keyword Planner for monthly search volume, Google Trends for emerging queries that volume tools have not caught up with, and Google Search Console for the queries you already appear on — the single most under-used demand source most sites own. AlsoAsked maps Google's “People Also Asked” trees, which is a fast way to turn a topic into a question set.

2 · Crawl access and AI bot control
The job: confirm the engines can physically reach you. This is the highest-leverage check in AI SEO and it costs nothing, because a blocked crawler is a guaranteed zero rather than a ranking penalty.
Start with your own robots.txt and confirm you are not disallowing GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, PerplexityBot, Claude-SearchBot or Google-Extended. Then check your CDN separately — a Cloudflare or Akamai bot rule can block a crawler your robots.txt welcomes, and this is a common silent failure. Cloudflare's AI Crawl Control monitors which AI crawlers reach your pages, sets allow and block policies per crawler, and tracks robots.txt compliance — and it is available on all plans, including the free one.
Decide deliberately rather than by default, because the economics are lopsided. Cloudflare's crawl-to-click analysis found Anthropic crawling roughly 38,000 pages per referred visitor in July 2025, OpenAI about 1,091 and Perplexity 195, against Google's 5.4 — with Cloudflare's own caveat, usually dropped when this stat is repeated, that some assistants send no referrer header, so the true gap is narrower by an unknown amount. Blocking training-only crawlers is a defensible commercial choice. Blocking the search and user-agent crawlers is how you disappear from an answer engine — and they are different bots, so read the names before you write the rule.
3 · Rendering and technical crawling
The job: make sure the content exists in the HTML the crawler receives. Vercel and MERJ analysed more than 500 million AI-crawler fetches in December 2024 and found no major AI crawler executes JavaScript — GPTBot requests JavaScript files in around 11.5% of fetches but never runs them. Googlebot renders your client-side app. OpenAI's crawler sees the shell. A page can rank on Google and be blank to ChatGPT.
The fastest free check is the Google Rich Results Test, which shows you the rendered HTML for a URL — if your main content is missing from the raw response, you have found your problem. For a whole site, Screaming Frog SEO Spider (free up to a URL limit) and Sitebulb will crawl with and without JavaScript and diff the two. Bing Webmaster Tools is worth adding as a free second index view.
4 · Content briefs and optimization
The job: decide what a page needs to contain and get it written well. This is the category most affected by the “AI SEO” naming collision — these are tools that use AI to do SEO, not tools that measure AI search. Both are legitimate; they are not substitutes.
Clearscope, Surfer and Frase all build briefs from what currently ranks, and all now market AI-search coverage alongside classic optimization. They are genuinely useful for throughput. What none of them can do is make a page worth citing, and the evidence on that is specific: the Princeton-led GEO study, benchmarked over 10,000 queries, found adding statistics lifted a source's visibility in generated answers by around 41% and citing sources by up to 115% for mid-ranked pages, while keyword stuffing performed roughly 10% worse than an unoptimised baseline on Perplexity (Aggarwal et al., GEO, KDD 2024). Term-coverage scoring optimises the thing that study found least useful. Add this layer last, and treat its score as a hygiene check rather than a target.
On generating the content itself: Ahrefs analysed 1,000,000 pages from the top 10 across 100,000 SERPs in June 2026 and found 9% of top-ranking pages were at least 80% AI-written, so AI drafting is not disqualifying. The same study found low- and moderate-AI pages taking two to three times the impressions of high-AI pages, and 49.28% indexation against 40.35%. Google separately warns against producing content variations at scale primarily to manipulate rankings. Draft with AI; publish with judgement.
5 · Structured data validation
The job: make sure your markup is valid and honest. Use the Schema Markup Validator for syntax and Google's Rich Results Test for eligibility. Both are free. Neither should be a large part of your plan.
This is where honest advice diverges most sharply from the sales pitch. Ahrefs tracked 1,885 pages that added schema markup and found AI citations barely moved, because most models never see your JSON-LD — it is stripped before the text reaches them. Google's own AI-features optimization guide advises against over-focusing on structured data for generative AI visibility, and against creating llms.txt files or special AI markup at all, since Google Search ignores them.
Two rich-result targets are also simply gone. Google stopped showing FAQ rich results on 7 May 2026 — announced only in the Search Central documentation changelog, never in a blog post — and removed the documentation the following month. HowTo rich results were restricted to desktop on 8 August 2023 and deprecated outright on 13 September 2023. Keep writing clean question-and-answer sections — each answer is a naturally self-contained, extractable unit, which is worth doing for its own sake — but no tool should be sold to you on the promise of a snippet that was switched off.
6 · AI visibility tracking
The job: find out whether the engines mention, cite and recommend you. This is the one layer of the stack with no free substitute outside Google's own surfaces, and it is where the money should go first once the free checks are done.
Start with the free half you already own. Google's AI-optimization guide points site owners at the Generative AI performance report in Search Console to measure how content performs in Google's generative AI features. That covers AI Overviews and AI Mode. It covers nothing else — and the gap is large, because across 15,000 long-tail queries Ahrefs found only 12% of URLs cited by ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot appeared in Google's top 10. Your Google data is a poor proxy for the rest of the field.

7 · Server-side measurement
The job: see what the bots actually did. This one has an unusual failure mode: GA4 cannot see AI crawlers at all. GA4 runs in the browser, and AI crawlers do not execute JavaScript, so GPTBot, PerplexityBot and ClaudeBot never fire a tag. If you look for them in GA4 you will conclude they never came.
Read crawler behaviour from server or CDN logs instead. Cloudflare's AI Crawl Control and Radar surface this without any log pipeline; on other stacks it is an access-log query. What you are looking for: which AI bots hit you, how often, which paths they fetch, and how many of those fetches return 404s — wasted crawl on a broken URL is crawl you do not get back.
How to tell an AI SEO tool is selling you noise
Every AI visibility tool works the same way underneath: it re-asks a set of prompts on a schedule and counts how often each engine mentions you. That makes every reading a sample, not a measurement — and samples carry error. Six questions separate a real instrument from a dashboard:
- Does it publish its sampling frequency? If you do not know how often a prompt is re-asked, you cannot interpret any movement in the number.
- Does it report a confidence interval? A bare visibility score is one draw from a noisy distribution presented as a fact. steek reports a 95% confidence interval on every metric specifically so you can tell a real movement from sampling variance.
- Does it split engines, or blend them? A single blended score can look healthy while you are entirely absent from the one engine your buyers use.
- Does it show real search volume per prompt? A 1–5 popularity bar cannot tell you whether an absence matters commercially.
- Can you read the raw answers? If you cannot inspect the text behind a claimed citation, you cannot audit it — or correct what the engine got wrong about you.
- Does it claim a causal lift? No public study offers causal, multi-engine citation-lift data. Any vendor promising a specific percentage improvement is extrapolating past the evidence.
For a sense of how much methodology matters, consider that the vendors cannot agree with each other on measurable questions. Asked what share of Google AI Overview citations come from the organic top 10, Ahrefs measured 37.9% across 863,000 SERPs while BrightEdge measured 16.7% with its own parser. Both are real studies by serious teams. They differ by more than a factor of two because they sampled differently and defined “overlap” differently. If two of the largest data companies in SEO can land that far apart on a countable question, a dashboard reporting your visibility to one decimal place with no interval is not being precise — it is being quiet about its error bars.
What you can skip
- llms.txt generators. Google states plainly that Google Search ignores llms.txt and special AI markup. Publish one as agent-facing documentation if you like — this site does — but not as a citation tactic.
- FAQ and HowTo schema generators sold for rich results. Both rich result types are retired. Write the Q&A for the reader and the retrieval instead.
- AI content spinners. The impressions and indexation gap in the Ahrefs data is not a penalty, but it is a real cost.
- A second tracker for the same engines. Two tools sampling the same prompts will disagree, because both are sampling. That disagreement is not a signal; it is the sampling error you were not shown.
Assembling the stack, in order
One number should govern how much you spend here, and it is the one the category's marketing leaves out. Semrush measured the traffic mix across more than 50,000 websites and found AI traffic growing 66% during 2025 but still amounting to 0.14% of all visits, while organic search held 16.04% and grew 2.38%. It is published by a company that sells AI-visibility tooling, which is exactly why it is worth trusting. The correct reading is not “ignore this” — buyers are plainly forming shortlists inside AI answers and arriving later through channels your analytics calls direct.
